Pearson has managed to acquire companies that vertically integrate almost the entire educational spectrum and at enormous expense to the American parent – the profit has to come out of somebody’s hide.

The Powers Behind Reform

Alec on a Mission to Dismantle Public Education

The mission of ALEC is to privatize public schools. Some of you might think this is a good idea to keep our schools competitive in the global market, but have we not seen enough of the dangers of privatization, to be concerned that our public school system is in the privatization cross hairs? Banks are privatized, so is our health care system, and many of our prisons. Has privatization worked for these institutions? Well it has worked for CEO’s, hedge fund managers, insurance companies, and prison lobbyists but not so much for the rest of us.

Perils of Standardized Testing

Meet a Common Problem in Public Education - A compilation of research about Common Core

Nonrandom Human Error in Testing

The Bottom Line
Human errors, both individual and systemic, occur in testing programs at all phases, and such errors can have a significant negative effect on students when high-stakes decisions are made. The degree to which testing errors are publicly diagnosed, accepted, and addressed varies significantly.

A Request to Make the Pearson Tests Public

My hope in writing this article is that other people (and perhaps also, news organizations like The New York Times) will also file Freedom of Information requests, and that Pearson and the state will recognize the public demand for transparency in testing and reverse their positions on test secrecy.

If a policy were 1. Supported by the wealthiest people in the country 2. Made huge profits for private corporations and 3. Insisted that poverty and racism should have no impact on outcomes, progressive people would normally be up in arms about it right? Welcome to the Education Policies of the Obama Administration under Arne Duncan! Are you going to make believe it's not happening or raise your voice in protest the way you would if were coming from Mitt Romney or George Bush? Here's a way of taking a stand. And you might even help bring a few Democrats to their senses!

Calling all angels - Jesse the Walking Man Turner keeps tellin' it like it is

Politicians, policy makers, private sector entities have come to view the resistance of parents, teachers, educators, advocates and activists for public schools to their proposals as defenders of the status quo. What they deny is that it is they themselves who, through their plans and legislative actions over the past quarter century, have become the chief perpetrators of thestatus quo.

Elizabeth Phillips: Teachers Need to Be Supported

Teachers are futurists: helping students prepare for a world yet to come, that they will make and repair. We cannot do that by dumping old knowledge into empty heads. We do it by forging relationships of authenticity, honesty, and share our passion for the world and its people, We teach to ignite sparks that catch fire and transform our troubled world. We teach to help unleash the voice and passion lurking deep inside all humans. We teach to develop bonds among humans--the bonds that sustain us through art, music, nature, and love. We do not teach for achievement. We teach so learning is a joyous journey.

Although I’m an individual with a background in the sciences – both from a formal education and as a hobbyist, my 15 years experience as a teacher has me convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that educating our youth effectively is an art.
